Therapy for the things that feel hard to say
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Therapy for problems worsened by self-criticism and shame: trauma, self-esteem, anxiety, grief and low mood.
Have you ever asked yourself "Why do I understand this but still find it so difficult to change it?" And have the answer shut down in ways that feel confusing to you. For some people it might be a whoosh of unpleasant emotions like anxiety, shame, frustration, embarrassment or fear, for others it can feel like an emptiness, sadness or even going numb.
While a part of you may have good insight into the cycles you would like to break, it is difficult to feel or act differently. That is exactly where evidence based therapy can help: building a safe, containing, supportive space where the difficult parts can be made sense of together.
Difficulties that benefit from therapy for self-criticism and shame
- Self-criticism, low self-esteem, shame and perfectionism - the inner critic that treats every day as an assessment
- Anxiety, low mood and overthinking
- OCD and intrusive thoughts - including the thoughts that frighten you most.
- Trauma - PTSD, CPTSD and including experiences from long ago that still shape how safe the world feels
- Shame after an online sexual experience - an area I researched at doctoral level
- Feeling disconnected - from your body, your feelings, or the life you're technically living
- Loss - bereavement, life transitions and loss related to change
- Health Anxiety- fixating on physical sensations, fears of illness and panic cycles
- Adjusting to, learning about and receiving support with ADHD and Autism diagnoses
mind and body together
Alongside evidence based talking approaches — cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, compassion-focused therapy, DBT, trauma-focused work — I bring mindful, body-based practice from my training as a yoga teacher: noticing the physical sensations that link to distress, and building your nervous system's capacity to settle.
Not because it's fashionable — but because for many people it's the missing piece after years of understanding without change.
practicalities
Sessions online across the UK or in person in London. We begin with a free consultation call. LGBTQIA+ affirming. Anti-racist and culturally humble reflective practice. A safe place to land, and talk openly about difference.
Change doesn’t have to begin
with becoming someone else.
Most self-criticism started life as protection. Somewhere along the way it stopped protecting and started costing: in overthinking, in flatness, in relationships that feel harder than they should.
Therapy is a place to understand how that pattern formed and to meet it differently. My work draws on compassion focused therapy, cognitive and trauma-focused approaches, and, where it helps, imagery, creative methods and attention to what the body is doing. Some clients want structure. Some want room to think. We work out which you need, and we go at your pace. Whatever we choose - you have found the right place for therapy for self-criticism and shame.
